FLIP

By Martyn Bedford

published by Walker books

A gripping psychological thriller from a new name in YA novels.

Ever wake up in someone else’s body?

Alex has. One day he was coming home from a mates house and the next, he has woken up in an entirely different teenagers’ body in an entirely different place!

Alex is now popular kid Philip, or Flip as he is known, and read this book to find out just what happened to him! It was December when he was coming home from a friends’ house, and now it is summer and Alex can’t remember what has happened in-between. After trying to contact his friends and family, he finds out that his deserted old body is in a life threatening Coma. So how come Alex switched souls with another being of which he has nothing to do with? Embark on a journey alongside this strong-willed teen to solve this mystery! With the help of old and new friends, Alex is able to uncover the truth…

An awesome book, i think! It’s comical, and full of jokes which lighten up the otherwise sad and heart-rendering story. It’s thrilling, a new kind of book and i have never read anything like it before…

It is really well written, and I have no idea how the author could be so imaginative.

Anybody need a break from dystopian fiction and vampire books? This is a brilliant alternative from those genres!

INSURGENT by Veronica Roth

By Veronica Roth, Published by Harper Collins Children’s Books (01.05.12)

After closing the INSURGENT blog tour, I am now closing the reviews week for #TeamDauntlessUK… Enjoy!

Fighting for survival in a shattered world…

The truth is her only hope.

The follow up to the bestselling Divergent, this sequel is bigger and better!

In Divergent, Beatrice becomes sixteen. Once a child is sixteen in her world, they must decide which of the five factions they must live in. Will they stay with their family and friends? Or will they move to another faction, in hope of a happier life?

When Beatrice changes from Abnegation to Dauntless, many events unfold. She fights for her life, and falls in love.

In INSURGENT, all of Dauntless and Abnegation factions have been scattered across the land following a brutal attack in the first book. Tris, with the help of Four, struggles to get over the loss of her beloved parents, and together, they find more friends and embark on a deadly mission to find out the truth of their world. Will they succeed? The evil Jeanine has a master plan to control all five factions, and she isn’t afraid to kill Tris, who stands in her way…

This book is brilliant! Right from the first page it was action packed, exciting and adrenaline filled. It may be pretty long at over 500 pages, but that didn’t stop me from ploughing through it as fast as I could. Every night I would be up thinking, what will happen next? What will happen to Tris? Will the factions be destroyed, or will everything be patched back together?  It has loads of twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat… this is the perfect teen’s book! It’s dark, dystopian, funny, and fast paced, i loved it!

TEAM DAUNTLESS UK : Insurgent

As INSURGENT is due from Veronica Roth within hours now, I was over the moon to be invited into the #teamdauntlessUK Faction and to be the one to close the blog tour.

26th April: Raimy @ Read a Raptor    Laura @ Sister Spooky Book Fan Girl

27th April: Liz @ My Favourite Books

28th April: Jayde @ Ink Scratchers   Hannah @ Hannah Mariska

If you want to read my review of Divergent, then click here.

Dauntless: what does it take to be in this faction?

To be in Dauntless, you need to be brave.

When you are in this faction, every day you find yourself jumping from trains and zip-wiring from buildings!

When Tris decides to change to Dauntless, she really wasn’t aware of the adrenaline rushes and the exhilarating rides you get when you are a Dauntless member and you’re travelling.   Also, you need to be prepared, for anything.

Dauntless is the most violent, and free, Faction of all… anything can happen! Take Dauntless HQ for example, an underground cave with no barriers, nothing stopping you from falling to your doom. Plus, you need to make an impression… Everybody dresses the same in Amity, Abnegation, Candor and Erudite, the same kinds of clothes, same colours. So do Dauntless, but what makes them different are the accessories. Piercings, tattoos, and jewellery are must haves!

And finally, you need to be Fearless, there is an adventure round every corner when you are a Dauntless faction member!!!

And here’s some fan art to close off the blog week – Firstly, a silhouette of a DAUNTLESS person, by the barrier in the pit, watching the waves crash against the sharp rocks below. I thought this would be a great picture because it was one of the scenes in DIVERGENT that I really loved; and I could imagine this place really clearly.

Next: One of the most important parts of DIVERGENT: the part I which Beatrice thrusts her hands over the DAUNTLESS bowl instead of the ABNEGATION bowl, the smouldering coal representing her new faction mixing with her own blood…with a quote from the book of her feelings about choosing DAUNTLESS!

And finally, no article is complete without an idea for some Dauntless fashion! Here is my interpretation of a regular girls piece of Dauntless clothing…

THE ADJUSTERS By Andrew Taylor

Published by: Usborne

They make you PERFECT. But first they make you SCREAM…

This book will be published in June, and I bet you this is going to be big!

Step into the perfect little town of Newton, hardly known, never seen by most people. When Henry Ward and his Mum move into this town, Henry immediately suspects something is going on around these parts. Every single kid acts weird- they are perfect, with top grades and amazing strength and sports abilities. How come Henry is one of the only people acting like a normal kid around here? He has to find out.

His Mum begins successful work at the MALCORP complex, a place on the verge of scientific breakthroughs. But what is the head of MALCORP, Mr. Mallory, planning to do to Henry? A special operation can turn a child into a genius, and after Henrys’ interfering, he has just got to the top of the waiting list…

This book is amazing! Constant suspense throughout, and I just couldn’t stop reading. Its addictive, and I had to read some parts again because they were so good. It’s the kind of book that keeps you up at night thinking, what will happen next?

I would certainly recommend this for about 11-up, and not for the faint-hearted, there are some really gory parts to this book!

The Chronicles Of Vladimir Tod: Eighth Grade Bites By Heather Brewer

Published by Dutton books

This book may be only 180 pages or so, but it is amazing!

Step into the world of teenager Vlad,a half vampire boy. His dad was a vampire, his mum a human, and they both perished in an unexplainable fire three years ago. Vlad now lives with his mum’s old friend Nelly, andtries to live a normal life with the help of his best mate Henry.

The sub. seems to be catching on to Vlad’s secret, fast….can Vlad keep his identity hidden from the strange Mr. Otis? The Power of Six by Pittacus Lore

Published by Puffin.

This thrilling book will leave you on the edge of your seat wanting to read more; it’s brilliant!

Everybody has either read ‘I Am Number Four’, or seen the major motion picture version, but that is nothing compared to the next book in its series. Read how Number Four, Six and Sam venture outside of Ohio to flee from the police and to find the unknown number who they have heard about.

Meanwhile, Number Seven is stuck in a nunnery in Spain. Her Cėpan has lost all faith in the other alien species that they belong to and has become strictly religious, and refuses to teach any legacies to Seven! Marina, (Seven), must get her Cėpan to help her, before it is too late and the Mogadorians get to them…

What an amazing book! It had me hooked from start to finish and there is suspense from page one right up to the end. It’s a really good read, and watch out for the next ones in the series out very soon!

INSIGNIA – by S.J.Kincaid

Published by Hot Key Books in August 2012.

Amazing- this book is the best book I have read in a while! It may not be dystopian or End-Of-The-World themed like many books teens like, but still, it is brilliant.

It is world war three, but battles are no longer fought on earth- lives are no longer at risk when the fights are done on different planets of the solar system! Teenage children are made to control the ships from earth, with the help of a small computer in their heads. When Tom accepts to become a plebe, (a trainee for the fighting), he begins on an awesome thrill ride, with new friends, and a new life, much different from his old one of switching from casino to casino with his drunken dad. He has loads of adventures in his new home of the Pentagonal Spire, from using simulators to train to using viruses to fight classroom battles- I wish this could be real! However, enemies are on their way; starting with a bully of a teacher (Blackburn), then soon Tom finds himself fighting for his life at the hands of somebody who is re-programming him, turning him into another person. Can Tom escape? Can his friends help? When secrets are kept at the Pentagonal Spire, Blackburn will do anything to get to them…

Wow! This book is so great; I ended up in bed most nights awake and reading this- or just wondering what on earth will happen next. It is a fast paced thrill ride that will make you laugh and cry, a perfect book for 11-15 year olds. Personally, I really think this is set to be better than Harry Potter, especially with more instalments on the way. S.J Kincaid is definitely the next J.K Rowling and I can’t wait to read more from this awesome author!!!

Waterstones Children’s Book Prize 2012 Winners announced !

Aardman Pirate Artist Strikes Picture Book Gold

 JONNY DUDDLE SCOOPS THE

WATERSTONES CHILDREN’S BOOK PRIZE 2012

Jonny Duddle, a concept artist for the new Aardman Animation film, The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists staring Hugh Grant and Salma Hayek, has won one of the most valuable and prestigious children’s book awards in the country, for his picture book The Pirates Next Door.

Announced at an evening ceremony on Wednesday 28th March at Waterstones Piccadilly, The Pirates Next Door was crowned overall winner of the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize 2012, after winning the ‘Best Picture Book’ category earlier in the evening. Fending off stiff competition from two other category winners (‘Best Fiction for 5-12s’ and ‘Best Book for Teenagers’), it was a good day for Duddle – whose vivid tale of a family of swashbuckling pirates who move to the quiet seaside town of Dull-On-Sea – claimed the top prize on the same day as the film’s release.

Pirates are something of a preoccupation for Duddle: this is his second picture book pirate adventure, following the success of his first, The Pirate Cruncher. His inspiration came, in part, from the year the author spent working on a square-rigger vessel, and his work as an artist on the Pirates of the Caribbean computer game.

The Waterstones Children’s Book Prize celebrates new and emerging talent in children’s writing. Announcing the award, Melissa Cox, Children’s Buyer at Waterstones, described the book as a thoroughly deserving winner: “The Pirates Next Door is full of the anarchic wit and invention children love in a picture book. It’s fresh and fun and has been a huge hit in Waterstones’ shops across the country, and had an incredible reception from booksellers, parents and, most importantly, children. Jonny is a huge new talent in the picture book field.”

Earlier in the evening, last year’s Waterstones Children’s Book Prize winner, Sita Brahmachari, presented Liz Pichon with the award for ‘Best Fiction for 5-12s’ for her “hilarious” account of a boy’s daily travails in The Brilliant World of Tom Gates; and Jenny Downham picked up the ‘Best Book for Teenagers’ gong for her uncompromising novel of teenage love and family loyalty, You Against Me, which deals with the issue of date rape.

Melissa Cox went on to say: “It was tough picking the category winners, with six excellent books in each. Liz Pichon’s The Brilliant World of Tom Gates won for 5-12s with its perfect marrying of text and illustrations, proving ever popular with children. It’s terrifically funny – it had us all in stitches!”

“We awarded Jenny Downham’s You Against Me the prize for ‘Best Book for Teenagers’ for its unique story, sensitively told. Downham is not afraid to tackle risky, topical themes, and she does so with poise and skill.”

The importance and high calibre of children’s publishing was commented on by James Daunt, Waterstones’ Managing Director: “The books we read in our formative years are of crucial importance. Our prize recognises this fact, championing exciting new writing and illustration and bringing the classics of the future to a huge audience.”

As category winners, Duddle, Pichon and Downham each received a cheque for £2,000 with Duddle, as the overall winner, picking up an additional £3,000, making this one of the most valuable prizes for children’s writing in the UK. The winning authors will also see a significant boost in sales, and the promise of an ongoing commitment to their writing career from all 295 Waterstones branches nationwide.

Notes on the three category winners for 2012:
